Giant Madagascar Day Gecko (Phelsuma madagascariensis grandis)
Giant Madagascar Day Geckos are beautiful, bright green lizards with striking red marks on the head and body. Not only can they run across (or hang upside down from) the glass sides of an aquarium, but they lick their eyes when misted with water! What could be cooler to watch? They average 10-11 inches as adults, and are active during the day when you are actually home to watch them. They are an excellent choice for placing in a display vivarium with live plants and soil! Although a warm spot and light source is needed, they do fairly well around room temperature. They are easy to care for since they'll eat insects (like crickets), fresh fruit, baby food, and "gecko food" available at most larger pets stores. However, they are not a lizard for frequent handling. They will throw their tail (which will re-grow in time), and their skin rips very easily. Communal housing (except for breeding) is usually problematic unless you have a large cage with lots of structure for hiding.
Spanish Orange Isopods (Porcellio sp.) 43, 44, 45
These roly-poly, or doodle, bugs are very easy to take care of and are great to have in high humidity cages as substrate cleaners for your other spiders and other invertebrates! Pretty much, these guys just get set up in a soil mixture containing some doty wood, supplied some hardwood leaves, and get fed vegetable pieces every few days. Keep the substrate fairly moist (not inundated), and they'll usually thrive. Since they are crustaceans and not insects, they have a higher calcium ratio which makes for a better feeder for your lizards and other pets.
